China’s Huizhou metropolitan area occupies a large swathe of the Pearl River Delta to the northeast of Hong Kong and Shenzhen. With a population of about 4.7 million, Huizhou is emerging as an economic force.
The Port of Huizhou, which opened in the 1990s, is an important regional entrepôt and export point, handling more than 80 million tons of cargo annually. Logistics and distribution companies move goods to and from Huizhou to Guangdong’s major population centers and Hong Kong in less than three hours via freight rail and road networks.
Electronics and petrochemicals are the dominant industries in Huizhou, accounting for a combined 63 percent of Huizhou’s value-added industrial output. Huizhou is home to two major industrial parks, which are populated by many information technology companies.
